A warm mug of cacao is the simplest way to enjoy the plant’s benefits, and it takes less than five minutes to prepare. Your “drinkable chocolate” is entirely customizable to your preferences and is flexible based on your tastes when it comes to sweetness and strength.
Whether you’re preparing for a virtual cacao ceremony with Keith the Chocolate Shaman or simply looking to sit down with a mug of cacao and a good book, this recipe is adaptable to whatever you’re looking to get out of it. The most important part is to listen to what your body needs, and of course, enjoy!
8 oz non-dairy milk (almond, soy, oat, cashew)*
.5 oz - 1.5 oz cacao (.5 oz = 1 tbsp)
1 tbsp maple syrup, more or less to taste
½ tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of cinnamon
Use a heavy knife to shave your cacao block into small slivers.
If a food scale is unavailable, measure one heaping teaspoon of well-ground cacao for each 0.5 oz serving.
Boiling water or milk is not necessary or recommended. Try water just warm enough to barely keep a finger in it.
Adding sweetener of your choice will not affect the energies of the cacao. Many experienced cacao drinkers use no sweetener at all. Both choices are perfectly fine!
Feel free to sub the milk with water. It’ll be less creamy and smooth, but it still works!
