Your Homecoming adventure begins here!

Whether you’re registered or dreaming of joining us, this guide brings together all the details to help you prepare for an unforgettable Homecoming in Guatemala.

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

Your journey begins at La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City. From there, it’s a 4+ hour ride through mountains and villages to Lake Atitlán and the town of San Marcos La Laguna.

  • Arrival: Plan to arrive in Guatemala City at least one day before the Homecoming start date to allow enough time for travel. You’ll need to be at the Eco-Hotel La Paz for registration on March 3rd between 11am–2pm.

  • Departure: Factor in the 4+ hours of travel back to the airport plus 2–3 hours for check-in and security. Most international flights leave early in the morning, so you may need to stay overnight in Guatemala City before departure. To enjoy the full Homecoming experience—including the Farewell Dinner on March 10—book a flight departing no earlier than March 11.

Airport Transfer Advice & Drop-Off Points

The easiest way to get to San Marcos is by private car transfer.

  • Cost: ~1275Q ($170 USD) for up to 3 people.
  • Ride Sharing: Use the Homecoming Facebook Group (see below) to connect with fellow travelers and split the fare.
  • Drop-Off Point: Make sure your driver knows your exact hotel or guesthouse. If you’re staying on or near Hippie Highway, you’ll likely be dropped at the basketball court—yes, that really is the landmark!

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

San Marcos has a wide range of hotels, guesthouses, and rooms to rent.

  • Best spot to stay: Aim for a place near Hippie Highway (Google it!)—the lively path down to the dock, lined with cafés, craft shops, and all the energy of the San Marcos vortex.
  • Style: From barefoot-rustic to full-on luxe, you’ll find it all here. Just know that rustic really means rustic—simple rooms, cold showers, and bring-your-own toiletries.
  • Favorites we love: Lush Atitlán, Kula Maya, El Dragón, Posada del Bosque Encantado, and La Paz Eco Hotel. La Paz is the most budget-friendly and it’s also where we’ll gather for breakfast each morning.

⚠️ Important: If you're booking through an online platform, double-check that your accommodation is in San Marcos—not San Pedro, not Tzununa. Only San Marcos will keep you close to the heart of Homecoming.

Currency Tips & Budgeting Guidance

  • Currency: Guatemalan Quetzal (Q).
  • Bring cash: 3000Q is recommended for the week (tuk-tuks, boats, meals, souvenirs).
  • Where to get it: Bring Quetzales from home if possible. Airport exchange is pricier. San Marcos has one ATM, but it sometimes runs out.
  • Pro Tip: Carry small bills (≤100Q) for easier transactions.
  • Cards: Most places take credit cards, but cash is still king.

What to Pack

Lake Atitlán days are sunny and warm, nights are cool. Pack layers and essentials:

  • Shorts for daytime / pants + sweater for evenings
  • Hiking shoes + sandals/flip-flops
  • Wool socks (for cool nights & mosquitoes)
  • Long-sleeve shirt (sun + bugs)
  • Swimsuit + wrap (modesty appreciated/no nudity)
  • Hat + sunscreen (strong sun at 1500 m)
  • Backpack for daily use
  • Flashlight/headlamp (paths are dark)
  • Insect repellent
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Personal toiletries (towel, soap, shampoo—many accommodations don’t provide these)

Comfort & Safety Information

  • Water: Do NOT drink tap water or brush teeth with it. Always ask for agua pura.
  • Food: Your ticket includes breakfast each day and three special dinners. We’ll make sure your dietary preferences and restrictions are noted and cared for in these meals, so you can relax and enjoy. Beyond that, San Marcos is a foodie paradise, with plenty of restaurants that cater to vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets.
  • Swimming in the lake/showers: Keep your mouth closed!
  • Walking at night: Safe, but dark paths—bring a flashlight and walk with friends.
